Voice & Acting teacher and Operatic Contralto Megan Gillespie is a Los Angeles native and earned her Master's Degree in Opera Performance from the Manhattan School of Music Conservatory. She has been teaching students the art of performance for over 20 years.
Megan is currently a judge for the Music Center Spotlight Program, conducts and stage directs operas and concerts in the US, and is Adjunct Faculty with the Music Department at Santa Monica College. She helps students realize their potential through an accepting, hopeful, positive approach — inclusive, patient, and empathetic, leading lessons with a lot of humor.
In her work with YoungArts and the Music Center, she passionately supports the educational and scholarship programs that encourage talented young people to pursue careers in the arts. Her students range from young beginners to working professionals honing their craft, and recently have won the Hal Leonard Competition and placed in the Spotlight Awards and the Classical Singer Magazine Competition. They attend universities such as NYU Tisch, UCLA, USC, Harvard, and Yale, and are seen and heard in TV, commercial, and film work with Disney, Warner Brothers, Netflix, and Sony. Megan teaches the techniques she won YoungArts and Spotlight with — bel canto, Alexander, Stanislavsky, and breath technique.
Awards: Regional MET National Council Auditions, Fe Bland Vocal Competition, Beverly Hills Music at the Mansion, LACMA Sundays Live, Opera Florham, AMTL Recitals in Carnegie Hall, Birgit Nilsson Scholarship, YoungArts, and the Palm Springs Opera Guild.
These results aren't a lucky streak. They're what 20+ years of consistent, individualized teaching produces — students placed at top conservatories and on professional stages, year after year.
I've been a student of Megan's for about 6 months and I've seen SUCH strides in my progress — and after 20+ years of voice study, that's saying something! A wonderful person, a giving teacher, and worth every cent.
Ms. Megan is seriously the best! She has helped me grow so much as a singer and performer, and she's always encouraging, positive, and genuinely cares about her students.
I am a semi-professional opera singer — twenty years in the LA classical scene, with plenty of teachers and coaches. I have never met anyone who has more incandescent joy of music, or who shares it more willingly, than Megan Gillespie. A true gem and a great teacher.
Without a doubt the best vocal teacher I've ever worked with. She creates an amazing, accepting space in every session, meets you exactly where you're at, and gives targeted feedback to reach your goals. Working with Megan has improved my confidence vocally and in my personal life too.
Megan teaches students leadership, helps them develop self-confidence, and pushes them to always do their best. She is exactly what every student would want in a teacher.
I began studying with Megan when I was six. Over ten years she helped me grow not just as a singer, but as a musician and a person — continually adapting to meet me where I was. Now that I teach voice myself, I carry her style into my own lessons. I wholeheartedly recommend her.
My weekly lessons with Megan are one of the highlights of my week. She is incredibly patient and compassionate, and her lessons are as much about appreciating the process as achieving the goal. My practice has become far more effective because of it.
Megan is patient, kind, and inquisitive, and works hard to help her students build confidence and find their passion within music. My girls adore her — their weekly Zoom lesson is often the highlight of their week.
My daughter's voice has improved exponentially, her confidence is up, she's signed with a Talent Manager, and she's building a career in entertainment. Megan lifts her students up and helps them be their best — as singers, as performers, and as people.
Megan, thank you for all you've done to develop Hollyn's voice and self-confidence. She's blossoming under your guidance. You clearly have a true and generous teacher's heart — and I interact with enough educators to know how rare that is.
McKenna had lessons from several coaches that never lasted — she just hadn't met Megan yet. They connected right away. Megan got her to embrace competitions and recitals, and coached her to the 2nd round of the Classical Singer Competition. Thank you for your dedication.
We met Ms. Megan when my daughter was 7 and too young to enroll — but Megan let her in after she sang. Now she's in the Bishop Amat Honor Choir and has placed in All-State choirs. Enrolling with Ms. Megan has been the best decision for our children.
Analise has gained a larger range, better tone, pitch and breath control, performance and microphone technique, and a lot of self-confidence. Megan always knows Analise's goals, follows her contests, and even attends some on her own time.
Megan brings a performer's discipline into classrooms, conservatories, and lecture halls. Her workshops are practical and skills-based — built to hold up under real pressure, on stage and off.
